How to add an enterprise keywords column in SharePoint?

To make it easy for users to add keywords, you can add the Enterprise Keywords column to a list or library. To enable the enterprise keywords field in SharePoint, Go to:

  • List/Library Settings >> Enterprise Metadata and Keywords Settings 
  • Enable Enterprise Keywords at the “Add Enterprise Keywords” section by selecting “Add an Enterprise Keywords column to this list and enable Keyword synchronization”

This should bring a new column “Enterprise Keywords “to your SharePoint list. Now, users can add Keywords to the “Enterprise Keywords” column by simply entering user-defined words or phrases.

These column values are stored in MMS service application term store and can be refined later.

Enable enterprise keywords & Add enterprise keywords column programmatically using PowerShell:

How to Manage Enterprise Keywords in SharePoint 2016?

SharePoint 2016 and SharePoint Online allow us to manage enterprise keywords through Term Store Management Tool. Enterprise keywords are stored in a non-hierarchical term set called “keyword”. The keyword set can be configured as:

  • Open – Users can add new keyword values. 
  • Closed – Users cannot submit new keyword values. They can use only existing managed terms.

A term store administrator can configure the keyword set as Open or Closed. You can use this approach to establish a stable keyword list that you can then move into a managed term set.
