There is a lot of information out there about website design and development. There are a lot of ideas, opinions, comments, and content. There is also a lot of noise and it can be difficult knowing where to find the best information to help you develop your craft.
So why not create a list of the best design and development blogs?
In this article I take a look at the 100 best blogs and websites for web designers and developers. I’ve given a short description about each one and I’ve carefully chosen two articles that clearly demonstrate what the site has to offer. They’re in no particular order.
1. Web Designer Depot
Founded by web designer Walter Apai, it’s a collaboration between designers worldwide who contribute features, articles, and tutorials to help grow the design community. Topics include HTML 5, CSS3, responsive design, typography, usability, jQuery, mobile apps, resources, business, freelancing, inspiration, and more.
This site contains lots of informational articles and tools for designers and developers. Articles include information on web design, web development, WordPress, tips, tutorials, inspiration, etc. They also produce products including one called Qards that lets you create amazing websites without writing any code.
Founded by Chris Coyier, this site originally covered CSS and now has a team of 11 that covers every aspect of web design and development. Their content includes articles, videos, code snippets, etc., and includes tutorials, news, general information, and more.
Since 2007 this site has produced articles, tutorials, recommended tools, tips and tricks, and more for designers, developers, techies, and bloggers. They like to write about plugins, tools, desktop and mobile apps, gadgets, gift ideas, and anything else they find interesting.
This site covers web design and development for anyone who designs and builds websites. They publish articles, news, tutorials, guides, and more. The site covers topics ranging from web design to WordPress.
6. Smashing Magazine
Founded by Vitaly Friedman and Sven Lennartz, this site produces articles, tutorials, and more for designers and developers. Topics include design, UX design, code, WordPress, mobile apps and design, graphics, etc. They cover software, concepts, news, etc., that includes CSS, Photoshop, eCommerce, plugins, themes, and lots more.
7. Just Creative
This is the design and portfolio blog of Jacob Cass. He’s a freelance graphic designer who blogs about web design, brand identity design, logo design, print design, typography, advertising, and lots more. It has many articles, graphic design tips, and resources on design.
8. Vandelay Design
The focus of this site is to equip creatives, small business owners, and entrepreneurs with the tools to develop their business ideas. They have lots of articles on web design, writing, web development, and more. They also have links to free resources, a shop with premium resources, and they give back to the community by providing free WordPress themes. They have a team of UI developers to help build any website you need.
9. TheNextWeb (Design & Dev)
This site has produced articles since 2006 that focus on international technology news, design, business, culture, and more. Content includes how-to, code, UX design, links and news about deals and courses, streaming videos of designing events, hardware, software, reviews, upcoming events, graphic design, and more.
Paul Andrew launched this site in October 2007 as a personal freelance web design homepage. It’s now grown into a web design magazine. It has tons of tutorials, resources, time-saving techniques, and even inspirational art. Topics include web design and development, graphic design, mobile development, advertising, design styles and trends, tech news, and more. They even have an occasional Lego post.
11. Design Bombs
(yes, that’s us) Originally started as a web design gallery, this site has now been reworked to be a place to share web design ideas, articles, tutorials, and resources to help web designers sharpen their craft. Content includes WordPress themes and plugins, roundups of website designs, freebies, exclusive deals, and more. Web designers will find lots of high quality resources here.
12. A List Apart
This site launched way back in 1998 by Jeffrey Zeldman. Articles focus on web design and are geared toward designers, developers, architects, specialists, strategists, project managers, and writers. Topics include code, content, design, business and the industry, tools, techniques, UX, and more.
13. FastCo Design
This is a business technology magazine that focuses in the intersection between business and design. It covers a wide range of topics that include electronics, UX, graphic design, architecture, fashion, consumer products, and much more. Designers provide insights, opinions, tips, news, and much more.
This design website produces many articles that showcase inspiring web design. They also produce resources and tutorials. They focus on design and catalogue the greatest projects on the web. They produce regular articles that teach readers new techniques for creating their own designs and share daily news from the industry. Topics include websites, typography, business branding, shortcuts, and lots more.
This is a daily online magazine from FutureNet that produces articles about web design, graphic design, 3D, digital art, audiovisual, typography, branding, illustration, UX, logo design, branding, mobile, and more. They provide tips, inspiration, news about latest trends, global design, tutorials, interviews, videos, etc., for any type of digital designer or artist with a primary focus on developing for the web.
16. Spoon Graphics
This is the design blog of Chris Spooner. He shares tips, resources, and inspiration to help designers of all education and skill levels. Content includes tutorials, articles, videos, news, and links to free resources. Topics focus on graphic design, graphic software, typography, templates, logos, and more. There’s also a members-only area that includes tons of downloads.
This design blog is from freelance web designers and developers Manoela Ilic and Pedro Botelho. It started as an experimental blog and became a place for sharing the passion for web design and web development. The team, as well as other contributors, publish articles and tutorials about the latest web trends, techniques, and more. It includes tutorials, freebies, a CSS reference, a playground for experiments, blueprints that discusses web design concepts, and a collective that includes design and news resources from the community. They also host giveaways.

This is an online magazine that focuses on lots of areas in design – including furniture design. Design topics include logos, social media, illustration, photography, creativity, advertising, product design, typography, apps, and more. It also includes humor, animation, food, and lifestyle among other topics. Content includes articles and videos. It has lots of articles that web designers will find helpful.
Here’s a blog about design that has lots of articles for inspiration. It was founded in 2006 by Fabio Sasso and Fabiano Meneghetti. It has useful tutorials for the most used applications with a special attention to Photoshop and Illustrator. Other apps include Pixelmator and Fireworks. It has lots of articles that include web design tutorials, architecture, illustration, photography, logo design, interviews, case studies, and more.
This is an online web magazine by Oliur Rahman that curates high quality content from around the web. It covers everything from technology to design. It covers hardware and software reviews and has a heavy emphasis on good design for both hardware and software. It covers tech, art (logos, backgrounds, etc.), design (everything from furniture to UI), wallpaper, deals, themes, and lots more.
This is a blog from Preston D. Lee that serves to fill in the gaps between business and design. The focus is on the entrepreneur and the freelancer. It includes articles, tips, inspiration, freebies, success stories, tutorials, and lots more.
24. Web Design Weekly
This site is a weekly magazine and blog that was created and is maintained by Jake Bresnehan. The magazine includes headlines, articles, tools, resources, inspiration, jobs, and more. Both the magazine and the blog include articles about programming code (CSS, HTML, etc.), tutorials, and more. Most of the content is in the magazine and is delivered via email. There is a heavy focus on code.
25. Designer News
This site is a community of people in design and technology. It takes a micro-blogging approach and is similar to Twitter. Users can post links to stories from around the web that they find interesting in the topic of design. They can also discuss the topics. Topics include Apple, CSS, site design, typography, business, UI, UX, and more.
Users can vote up on the content, which then shows the most interesting articles to the most people. It also includes a job board.

This is the blog of a digital design firm who shares their knowledge about design. The articles cover many topics such as inspiration, business, productivity, design, creating content, UX, technology, software, tools, marketing, interviews, profiles, case studies, etc.

This is a site that’s curated by Howells—Studio and includes and contains links to over 4500 websites that show excellence in design. They look for cleanliness and simplicity without gimmicks or decoration. This is a great way to see what works and what a good site should look like.
You can browse sites by style, subject, type, platform, or just do a search. They provide a FAQ to show their criteria and you can submit your own site. It shows the date that a site was added, which can help you see how design has changed over time.

This is a community of digital professionals, which includes names such as Dainis Gravies and Kristi Hines, that share their knowledge of web design. The blog includes reviews, design concepts, UI, UX, mobile, WordPress themes, typography, humor, tips, trends, business, and more.
It includes a shop where they recommend courses, e-books, themes, and more. They also have a jobs board where you can post or search for jobs.
This blog from Drew McLellan is an advent calendar for web geeks that brings daily web design and development articles for twenty-four days each December. These articles remain on the screen until the next December when they’re archived and the new articles are published. Topics include business, code, content, design, process, and UX.
This is an online magazine from NeedWant. This site is a collection of thoughts from many writers, editors, designers, entrepreneurs, etc., about things they own and what they like about them. They discuss how they use them. There are lots of professional photos of them demonstrating the products. Each product has a link to where you can buy it.

This blog covers lots of topics on design and development. It includes articles, tutorials, tools, resources, freebies, and inspiration. It covers graphics, logos, typography, web design, Photoshop, WordPress themes and plugins, CSS, Illustrator, jQuery, and more. It has plenty of tips, links to downloads, reviews, collections, etc. There are also tips for best practices and themes for specific professions as well as those for all around use.
Here’s is a web design Blog that produces web UI design tutorials. They also share free website templates and web resources for web designers and developers to download. They talk about the latest trends and techniques in web design, and the best tricks and techniques to create websites with the best UI’s. The blog contains lots of tutorials and links to freebies. This site is from Nick Frost and Greg Lapin. It contains free and premium resources for web developers. Most resources are graphics. This is a Singapore-based online magazine for designers and web developers. It provides many resources, articles, tutorials, and links. Topics include design, graphics, WordPress, CSS, social media, development, giveaways, toolkits, events, and more. Tutorials include step-by-step instructions on writing code, modifying images in Photoshop, etc. There’s even a comic strip that’s focused on design and web development, and occasionally other topics.

This site was created by Floris Dekker. It’s curated by Floris and his friend Andrew McCarthy. They provide daily updates about design. Topics include web, UX, UI, fonts, icons, Sketch, apps, mobile, news, reviews, tutorials, code, and more. The articles are very short – resembling Twitter posts. Many of them use animated GIF’s.
44. Viget Inspire
This blog comes from a larger project by Brian Williams, Andy Rankin, and Wynne “Pop” Williams that was established in 1999. The blog covers design and interaction of all kinds. Topics include UX, color, accessibility, news, events, challenges, experiments, branding, apps, games, illustration, tutorials, and lots more.

Launched in 2012, this is a design and development blog specifically for web designers and developers. Content includes articles, tutorials, code, roundups, the latest web trends and techniques, tips, free PSD files, and inspiration. There are plenty of free graphic resources such as icons, web design templates, UI kits, mock-ups, and more. All of their freebies can be used for personal and commercial usage.

This is a site that’s devoted to recognizing the talent and effort of the world’s best web designers, developers, and agencies. The purpose of the site is to be a meeting point where web professionals can find inspiration, share their knowledge and experience, receive and give constructive criticism, and even debate their viewpoints on design concepts. It includes a directory, shop, job board, and blog. The blog includes lots of articles, links to free resources, videos, events, interviews with designers, and web development tutorials.

This is an online magazine for and by the UX community. The target audience is the beginning-to-intermediate UX and UI designer. It was founded by Matthew Kammerer, David Leggett, and Andrew Maier in 2009 as a place where designers come to discuss best practices and trending topics. Categories include analytics, business strategy, content strategy, information architecture, interaction design, philosophy, research, resources, universal design and accessibility, and visual design. Articles are very thorough and thought-provoking.
66. Elegant Themes Blog
This blog provides daily updates on website design and development using the WordPress platform. Articles are written by experienced web developers and designers. It includes lots of articles that include tips, tricks, CSS, code, developing websites for various fields, social media, themes and plugins (from Elegant Themes as well as other companies), Photoshop, the web-development business, eCommerce, reviews, pages your website needs, SEO, resources, and lots more.

This site contains lots of design information and inspiration on several topics. Categories include inspirations, design, architecture, photography, technology, travel, and animals. Although the focus isn’t on web design, there is a lot of general information about design that’s helpful in any field. The photography category alone has plenty of content to inspire web designers. The technology category is great for product design.
Founded in 2002 by Marcus Lillington, Paul Boag, and Chris Scott, this blog gives lots of advice on UX design. Categories include strategy, training, governance, mentorship, a podcast, books, and more. Content includes articles and audio. Topics cover design, development, marketing, interviews, accessibility, better UX, content strategy, digital strategy, design, mobile, news, questions and answers, reviews, talks, and working in web.

This is the blog of the subscription site TreeHouse. The blog contains many articles about web development and design. The blog contains categories such as news, community, learn, industry, and more. Articles cover topics such as design concepts, code tutorials, roundups, software reviews, graphics, information about courses, career advice, mobile, trends, tips, and more. This is a free online magazine that explores all areas on experience design. It was founded in 2005 by Alexandre Schleifer and Constantinos Demetriadis. They focus on topics such as customer experience, how UX fits into technological developments, project planning, and organizations. They work to deepen the thinking around user-related design. Articles include news, reviews, exploration of UX, and more. They also provide information about events such as conferences, classes, workshops, etc. There is also a UX job board where you can search and subscribe to updates.

Founded by Jared M. Spool, the company itself dates back to 1988. The mission of the company is to help clients solve their design problems. The blog contains article in many categories including content strategy, customers, design, design decisions, design deliverables, design principles, design process, design strategy, design teams, designers, journey maps, lean UX, personas, project kickoffs, scenarios, service design, starting UX projects, style guides, team management, UI20, UIE, user engagement, user experience, and UX.

This is a weekly magazine of hand-picked list of UX design links curated by Kenny Chen. The topics include UX, UI, tools and resources, media, portfolios, 100 days of UI design elements, prototyping, interviews, reviews, and lots of tutorials. The issues are delivered through email but you can also see the on the site. Each issue is archived so you always have access to them.

This is a website and blog that focuses on making the best possible website layouts to improve the user interface. The site talks about best practices, layouts, how to merge functions for a cleaner design, using social proof, how and where to repeat your call to action, how to make clickable and selected styles distinct, how to recommend a choice to help users in decision-making, allowing undos for decision mistakes, being specific about who your audience is, showing more contrast, using fewer fields, showing all of the options, and lots more. The information is short, simple, and easy to follow.

This web magazine was founded by Pabini Gabriel-Petit in 2005 to provide insights and inspiration to UX developers. It provides lots of articles on advice, best practices, topic over-views, and deeper thought pieces that explore the strategic aspects of UX design. This blog was started in 2011 by Justin Mifsud as a hobby-site to talk about the importance of website usability. This is the creative blog from the IM Creator team. It covers all aspects of web design and includes lots of articles, tutorials, tips, tricks, inspiration, freebies, and more. The primary focus is on web design, graphics, and business. There are lots of web design tutorials.
This site was started in 2007 and offers insights for designers, artists, photographers, and entrepreneurs about the intersection between design, business, and photography. For designers it includes inspiration, freebies, articles, and resources. For business it includes behavioral science, tech, lifestyle, and offbeat.
For photography it includes techniques, gear, news, and gallery. You can choose a single topic (design, business, or photography) and ignore the others, but all three together combine to give lots of information to the web designer from a usability, visual, and business standpoint.
A Note About How I Choose the Sites
For this article I searched the web for sites that had content that would make a difference to web designers and developers. I looked to sites with well-written, clear, and substantial articles that were written for designers and developers by designers and developers.
I ooked for professionals who make a difference in advancing the field. I looked for content that discussed CMS’s such as WordPress, tools such as Photoshop, tutorials for code such as CSS and HTML, thoughts on user experience (UX) and user interfaces (UI), tips, tricks, resources, and freebies. These sites are the top 100. They have plenty to offer any web designer or developer at every stage in their career.
